Hello! I am currently a principal research scientist (IC8) at Google DeepMind on the Gemini team.

I work on post-training, RSI, and research related to discovery, math & science. Broadly, I am interested in game changing research and also making continuous impact to Gemini.

In 2025, I helped train the first Deep Think model that achieved the historic IMO gold medal. In 2026, I co-invented a new paradigm that is widely adopted in latest Gemini releases (Gemini 4 Argon, 3.8 Flash etc). In the recent past, I’ve made numerous modeling and captaining contributions to various versions of Gemini releases.

I am currently based in Singapore where I currently lead the SG Gemini / GenAI team. In 2025, I helped co-found GDM Singapore with Quoc Le, Eugenie Rives and Jeff Dean. Our mission is to show that it’s possible to be on the bleeding edge in a place like Singapore, and set a precedent / good example as the strongest AI team in SG, Asia and beyond.

Personal

I am interested in badminton and classical piano. I try to be healthy these days and be active and go to the gym. I also interested in traveling these days. You can check out my personal life on my instagram.

In 2012, I obtained an associate diploma in classical piano performance (ATCL).

Pre-GDM history

Before returning to Google, I was chief scientist & co-founder of a US-based foundation model “unicorn” AI startup (i.e., Reka AI) where we managed to build a GPT-4 class multimodal model from scratch in a under a year with a tiny team. We raised a cool $120M USD while I was there and managed to be a top-5 org on LMSYS at our peak (and for a very short while).

Before my brief sabbatical as a startup founder, I was senior research scientist at Google Brain where I worked on AI research. During this time, I worked extensively on Transformer scaling & architectures. My notable contributions at that time include PaLM-2 (where I was one of the modeling/architecture co-leads), UL2, and contributing to other major LLM efforts like Flan-2, PaLM-1, PaLI-X, etc.

As a side project, I also invented generative retrieval (by making one of the pioneering contributions in this field known as DSI or Differentiable Search Index). This is widely adopted in industry today.

Before that I obtained my PhD from NTU, Singapore in 2019 and Bachelors in 2016.
